Ball valves use a rotating ball in the center of the valve to control the flow of water. Water flow is controlled by a hollow that passes through the center of the ball. When the hollow of the ball is aligned with the inlet, fluid is allowed to flow through the valve and out of the piping system. When the hole is perpendicular to the pipe, the pipe is closed and water cannot enter through the valve. The lever handle also indicates whether the valve is open or closed. When the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is closed.
