What is the difference between PVC, UPVC and CPVC?

Nov 09, 2022

PVC is polymerized from vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). PVC material has the characteristics of non-toxic, anti-aging and acid and alkali resistance, so it is very suitable for the use of chemical pipeline.

PVC (PolyVinylChloride) has seven grades (SG1-SG7) according to the hardness and properties of the material, with a density of 1.4g/cm. Below SG4 are generally soft products, which need to add a large amount of plasticizer during molding, mainly used for making artificial leather, insulation layer of wire and cable, sealing parts, etc.

SG5 and above are hard products, mainly used to make all kinds of pipes, such as drainage, electrical, post and telecommunications pipes and pipe fittings, all kinds of plates, sheets, profiles, etc.

PVC molding shrinkage rate is 0.6-1.5%, has good mechanical properties, excellent electrical properties, and has self-flameout, strong acid and alkali resistance, good chemical stability, low price, is a very widely used general plastic. But because its use temperature is not high, the highest in 80℃ or so, hinder its development.

CPVC

CPVC is a polymer material modified by chlorination of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). After chlorination of PVC resin, the chlorine content is increased from 56.7% to 63-69%, which increases the chemical stability and improves the heat resistance, acid, alkali, salt, oxidant corrosion resistance of the material.

UPVC

PVC raw material to add a certain amount of solid additives (no plasticizer) composed of the mixture, called hard polyvinyl chloride (UPVC).

Introduction to Piping System

UPVC and CPVC piping systems are corrosion resistant, impact resistant, not easy to deformation, smooth inner wall, not easy to scale, good insulation, non-conductive, easy bonding, long service life and other characteristics.

Therefore, the UPVC and CPVC piping systems have gradually replaced other metal piping systems on the advantage of high cost performance and low construction cost. Moreover, UPVC and CPVC piping systems are convenient and fast for maintenance and do not need to shut down for a long time and cause huge losses. Therefore, UPVC and CPVC piping systems are the first choice for industrial piping design at present.

The maximum allowable operating temperature of UPVC piping system is 60 ℃ and the long-term operating temperature is 45 ℃. It is suitable for conveying temperature below 45℃ some corrosive media; It can also be used for the transportation of ordinary pressure fluid, which is generally used in water supply and drainage pipes, agricultural irrigation pipes, environmental engineering pipes, air conditioning pipes, etc.

The maximum allowable operating temperature of the CPVC piping system is 110 ℃, and the long-term operating temperature is 95 ℃. It is suitable for conveying hot water and corrosive media within the standard allowable pressure range. Generally used in petroleum, chemical industry, electronics, electric power, metallurgy, papermaking, food and beverage, medicine, electroplating and other industrial fields.
